Books, a (very) short history

The main way that reading has changed since I was younger is through ebooks. I think that this is a good thing overall, allowing people that can not find the time to go to the library to have a large selection of books always on hand. Additionally, it is easier for people to fit reading in when you have five minutes of downtime if the book you are reading is on your phone. I think people read more of what they want because it can be concealed easier, allowing them to read things that they find embarrassing without having to announce it to the rest of the world.

I think the world is going to become more and more electronic as time goes on. Paper books will exist in some form for the rest of my life but I think that ebooks will become the standard. As it is now more and more books are being released exclusively as ebooks or very limited print runs. With being stored electronically, books can be preserved forever at almost no cost. Additionally, I would not be surprised if books started to have an augmented reality component where you can see artist visualizations of things as you read the book.

  1. You are right ebook are here to stay and they are very convenient. I am not a fan of them, but they do service their purpose. I know I was visting my daughter and I had forgotten to bring my book along. I just went on to my library's website and downloaded a copy of it to read. Also, I know they are great for people who travel alot. And as you mentioned, you can request books without anyone knowing what you are reading. It provides a level of privacy.

  2. The convenience is it's biggest selling factor, you can't argue against it, it's made reading soo much more accessible. Full points!

  3. I just got back from vacation and sure wished I had an electronic copy of my 350 page book! Your thoughts on augmented reality with ebooks is super interesting. I wonder if eventually we can just go straight into the book to get the full immersive experience. I'd love to be able to visit the Harry Potter Universe (without shelling for Universal Orlando tickets)

  4. I have a much easier time finding time to read e-books when I have downtime. It feels like more of a hassle to pull out a physical book, deal with a bookmark, find my place, and so on. And it takes me time to get into my audiobook, so if I only have a few minutes, I don't want to listen to an audiobook.
