Week 6 Prompt

For this week’s prompt, I am coming up with an idea to promote different horror materials within the library. For this I would first find several horror books and cover their spines with black construction paper. I would then make friendly looking monsters on the spine, relating to the monsters in the book if possible. These books would then be “hidden” in different sections of the library where they don’t belong. I would also do this with some movies. Before “mis-shelving” these resources I would make sure to make detailed notes about where each book is located for when we stop doing this program and if a patron is looking for one of the books that is being used as a monster book. My hope with this would be to have patrons that usually only look in one or two sections of the library find a new book or author they like by seeing something that is out of place.

  1. Hi Zack, I like your idea of "hiding" the books, and it's definitely a good idea to make notes about what is hidden where so you can find everything! Would you consider using any signage to alert patrons that there are "scary" books around... to "watch out for some monsters"? That way they would know they are supposed to notice the out of place books and take time to look at them.

This would be a good activity to do in October, leading up to Halloween, in lieu of or in complement to a display!

  2. That's a cool idea! It's akin to the "blind date with a book" Valentine idea I've seen float around the last few years. I think Laura's idea of adding promos is great, too. I think it could spur a spooky scavenger hunt in the library for horror materials!

  3. This is a neat idea! Like Laura said, I think the way you choose to advertise this is important. It might be fun to market it as a scavenger hunt for grown ups. Making sure the staff know what's going on is also crucial, since as you said, books will not be shelved correctly.
I am wondering, though, if "mis-shelving" the books is necessary. Patrons would still enjoy the hunt if they were shelved correctly, since they do not know which titles were chosen for the monster theme.

  4. What a unique idea! I think that's a great way to get patrons to check out something they may normally pass by. I also love Laura's idea about "watching out for monsters." Full points!
